Department of Epidemiology, as one of the earliest organizations in China to conduct research work in cancer epidemiology, was founded in 1978 based on the study group of cancer registration and cancer control. The Shanghai Cancer Registry, a population-based cancer registry, was initiated and established in the Department to collect and analyze data of caner incidence, mortality and survival, as well as secular trends of cancer incidence during the period of 1963 and 2001. In March 28, 1980, Shanghai Cancer Institute was designated as a WHO Collaborating Centre for Research on Cancer. Prof Yu-tang Gao, chief of the Department, was appointed as the head of the Centre. As early as the beginning of 1980s, the Department started to communicate and cooperate in cancer research with some distinguished research institutions and universities such as IARC, NCI, University of Southern California, University of Minnesota and Vanderbilt University, Yale University, etc. The collaborating research activities covered almost all areas of cancer epidemiology. Since the year of 1990, the department initiated nutritional and molecular epidemiological studies in succession. A series of case-control and cohort studies were conducted, focusing on common cancers or cancers with sharply increasing morbidity such as cancers of the lung, stomach, esophagus, colorectum, pancreas, liver, breast, ovary, endometrium, nasopharynx, bladder, prostate and biliary tract.
During the past two decades, investigators in the Department published more than 300 papers in reputable peer-reviewed domestic and international journals such as Lancet, JAMA, JNCI, Cancer Res, BMJ, etc, and were awarded with ten prizes (first, second and third grades) for their achievements in science and technology from the Chinese Government, Chinese Ministry of Health and Shanghai Municipal Government. A total of twenty four Master students graduated from the Department since 1986.
The investigators in the Department currently undertake three large-scale cohort studies (The Shanghai Cohort Study, the Shanghai Women’s Health Study, the Shanghai Men’s Health study) and three population-based case-control studies in collaboration with NCI, Vanderbilt University, University of Minnesota and Yale University, one project funded by Shanghai Science and technology Committee, and three projects funded by Shanghai Health Bureau.
Our missions in the current and future are as follows: 1). to describe cancer incidence, mortality and survival status in urban Shanghai, evaluate the role of environmental factors (e.g. diet, nutrients, lifestyle, etc.) in the development of cancers based on the conducted and on-going studies; 2). to conduct cancer molecular epidemiological studies by means of advanced techniques of biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, genetics, etc, focusing on the roles of diet, nutrients and genetic polymorphisms and gene-environment interactions in carcinogenesis. 3). to explore new approaches to cancer prevention and control in communities referring to the terms of reference of WHO collaborating centre for research on cancer.

Prof. Yu-tang Gao, chief of the Department, head of WHO collaborating Centre for Research on Cancer, director of academic committee of Shanghai Cancer Institute, editor in chief of the journal “Tumor(Shanghai)”and emeritus president of Society of Cancer Epidemiology, Chinese Anti-Cancer Association (CACA). Dr Gao graduated from Harbin Medical University in 1955. During the period of 1979-1980, he was trained in Cancer Epidemiology and Biostatistics in IARC, Lyon, France. After return, he actively conducted cancer epidemiologic studies in collaboration with institutes and organizations within China and abroad, and was appointed as teaching faculty |
member several times for the international training courses on cancer epidemiology. Dr. Gao also served as a member of editorial board of the journals of “Cancer Causes & Control”, “Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention”, etc. He is an emeritus member of American Association of Cancer Research (AACR). In the past several decades,Dr. Gao focused his attention on cancer epidemiology and biostatistics. He organized a number of large-scale population based case-control studies on almost all common cancers since the year 1980. Of these studies, the series of studies on lung cancer were as the main component of the Chinese national key project on lung cancer during the periods of the sixth, seventh and eighth five-year plans. He also directed several large-scale cohort studies. For example, the male cohort recruiting 18,000 men in the mid of 1980’s was already followed-up for more than twenty years; the cohort study on association of smoking, air pollution and cancer risk including 210,000 adults has achieved numerous important findings. In recent years, a female cohort with 75,000 subjects was set up to investigate the dietary inhibitors on cancers. The projects mentioned above were awarded with prizes of different levels. As a famous epidemiologist, Dr. Gao has published more than 200 papers in peer reviewed journals in domestic and abroad.
