State Key Laboratory of Oncogenes & Related Genes (SKLORG), affiliated to Shanghai Cancer Institute and Shanghai Jiaotong University, was founded in 1985 and approved to function in 1987.
The current director of the laboratory is Professor Hongyang Wang, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering. Professor Shengli Yang, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, is the chair of the academic committee which includes 15 distinguished experts and scholars specialized in molecular biology, molecular genetics and cell biology. Professor Jianren Gu, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, is the former director and academic committee chair of State Key Laboratory, and honorary president of Shangha i Cancer Institute.
The laboratory currently has 52 faculty and staffs, including 35 scientists (18 senior researchers). Meanwhile, the laboratory occupies 5300 square meters and is well equipped with 13 pieces of instruments valued more than 200 thousand yuan. At present, the State Key Laboratory consists of seven research sections: Functional Genomics; Tumor Invasion and Metastasis;? Epigenetics; Molecular Pathology; Gene Therapy; Signal Transduction; Systems Biology.
Based on the principles of systems biology and approaches of genomics, proteomics, metabonomics and molecular cell biology, the research projects in SKLORG are mainly focused on: 1, identifying novel genes related to hepatocellular carcinoma (i.e. oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes, apoptotic genes, DNA repair genes a nd other therapeutic genes); 2, elucidating the mechanisms of hepatocarcinogenesis and liver cancer metastasis; 3, developing the novel methods for early diagnosis and prevention. With the scientific and technical advantages and long-term research experiences, the State Key Laboratory’s aim is to establish a comprehensive cancer research center with high international reputation for the basic and applied researches and scientist training.
In the recent years, SKLORG won 30 research grants supported by National Grants for Basic Research (973), National Hi-Tech Program (863), National Key Technologies R&D Program, National Foundation of Natural Sciences, etc.? Among the scientific achi evements, 61 items have been filed for China Patent, 4 of them have been registered in PCT. The scientists in the State Key Laboratory have won 15 awards including the Award of National Science and Technology Progress (Grade II), the Awards of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress (Grade I and II) and two Awards of Shanghai Medical Science and Technology. In the mean time, the laboratory has published more than 360 scientific papers, and trained 42 postgraduates for Ph. D. degree and 65 for master’s degree. |
